Ever see the movie Groundhog Day? It’s about a guy stuck in one day that keeps repeating itself. He could change the events of that day, but eventually was still doomed to repeat it. However, he learned that if he made small adjustments, he could make each day more worthwhile. What he found though, was that no matter how he improved that day, it only mattered if he could start the following day with what he learned from the previous one. In order for his February 1st to be truly extraordinary, there would have to be a February 2nd. It wasn’t until I met Debbie that I found my February 2nd.
We were two adults on opposite ends of California certain to never bow down to online dating, yet, we became like little children convinced our fate wouldn’t have happened without it. Call it an online dating success story if you like, but it was nothing short of a miracle. You see, I had given up on the possibility of finding love again after becoming a widow seventeen years ago with a one and three year old child in tow.
Debbie never lost a husband, but never found true love either and was raising her daughter alone. When we met, at last, it was as if the finishing piece of a puzzle was finally set into place. Debbie fell in love with my children and I fell in love with her daughter and although they are now teenagers we are all very excited about ultimately having a family.
We love the ocean, so one evening, I took Debbie to the beach. As we sat on the sand below the stars, I handed her the final chapter of my memoir. With the bright silvery moon providing just enough light, she read about my encouragement to others to not give up on finding “true” love because I finally had found it in Debbie and it was well worth the wait. I also included that I was going to ask her to marry me, and when she read that sentence, she began to cry. Then, with tears in her eyes she looked up and I asked her to spend the rest of her life with me.
The truth is, I’d marry Debbie in a garbage dump if it meant being able to see her smile everyday. But, because I believe what we found to be miraculous, the vows we exchange should be in one of the most miraculous places in the world. She’s truly a woman that I wish I could hand the sun to, but since I can’t…who better than “The Islands of the Bahamas” to hand the sun to both of us. We have each devoted our lives to our children, and have never asked for a bailout…until now. Please allow me to marry the most wonderful woman in the world in the most wonderful place in the world. You share your miracles with us, and we’ll share ours with you!
